The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is an effective test to determine performance toward proficiency in a chosen language. The test covers three main modes of communication — Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational — to assess learners’ ability to listen, read, speak, and write. In fact, the AAPPL is the only test for learners in Grades 3-12 that assesses interpersonal speaking.

1. Understand the Test Sections（1. テストの構成を理解する）
The AAPPL is a proficiency and performance assessment that aligns with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines – 2024 and the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. It includes four sections and should take about two hours to complete as each section requires around 30-40 minutes. The test is not timed, but it’s often best to instruct learners to stick to the time estimates so they don’t take too long. Remind them how much time they have left during the test and when they need to move on to the next section. If needed, you can offer breaks to learners as their progress is saved after every completed question. Students can close and return to the test another day, but remember that tests are auto-submitted after 14 days.

The AAPPL is rated according to three levels — Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. There are four levels in Novice, five in Intermediate, and one for Advanced.
AAPPLの評価レベルは、「初級（Novice）」、「中級（Intermediate）」、「上級（Advanced）」の3段階です。初級は4つのレベル、中級は5つのレベル、上級は1レベルになっています。
In general, encourage learners to read the instructions for each task carefully, stay calm, and show off their skills.
全体的なアドバイスとして、各タスクの指示をよく読み、落ち着いて自分のスキルを披露するよう生徒を励ましましょう。
Interpretive Listening and Reading（受容モード：リスニングとリーディング）
The Interpretive tests include a series of tasks learners need to complete by reading and listening. The first type of task is matching images to words by dragging and dropping them into the correct slot. The second type of task is multiple choice, where learners need to choose the correct answer out of a few options. Tell your learners to focus on the main topic in the question or reading piece, as it will guide them to the right answer.
受容モードのテストでは、読んで理解するタスクと聞いて理解するタスクが行われます。1つ目の形式は、画像に合う単語をドラッグ＆ドロップで正しい場所に移動させる「マッチング」です。2つ目は数個の選択肢から正解を選ぶ「選択式」です。問題文や読解文の主なトピックに集中することが、正解を導き出す鍵になると生徒に伝えましょう。
Learners can play the listening components again if they get stuck or don’t hear it correctly the first time. They can also look back at the text to find the answers if they need to.
リスニングでは、一度で聞き取れなかった場合や行き詰まった場合に、音声を再度再生することができます。リーディングも同様に、答えを探すためにテキストを読み返すことが可能です。
Prepare your learners for this portion of the test by guiding them to watch videos and read texts in the target language either at home or in class. Familiarize yourself with the AAPPL Interpretive Score Descriptions to understand how the test rates their listening and reading ability. Note that the IL and IR sections are rated by a computer, ensuring consistency and fairness in marking.

Interpersonal Listening and Speaking（対話モード：リスニングとスピーキング）
The test’s Interpersonal Listening and Speaking (ILS) portion of the AAPPL assesses a learner’s ability to have an unscripted conversation with a simulated video chat partner. For each section of this test, the chat partner will ask a question and prompt the test taker to respond. Learners can re-listen once within 7 seconds, if they need to. Recording will start after the video has finished, which is shown by the microphone icon turning red. Ensure your learners know to look for this before they speak.
対話モード（ILS）では、シミュレーションされたビデオチャットの相手と、台本のない自然な会話をする能力を評価します。チャット相手が質問を投げかけ、受験者に回答を促します。必要であれば、7秒以内であれば一度だけ聞き直すことができます。ビデオが終わるとマイクのアイコンが赤くなり録音が始まります。話し始める前にこのアイコンを確認するよう生徒に徹底してください。
While learners take the test, make sure there is minimal to no background noise so their recordings are clear and understandable.
受験中は、録音された声がクリアで聞き取りやすくなるよう、背景のノイズを最小限に抑えるようにしてください。
Encourage learners to speak clearly and confidently and not worry too much about making errors. They should speak as much as possible to show their understanding of the topic, without rambling. Ideas and thoughts should be as organized as possible. It’s also important for learners to use tenses other than the present tense if they are aiming for the Intermediate and Advanced scores. Review the AAPPL Interpersonal Score Descriptions beforehand to set goals with your learners.
生徒には、間違いを恐れすぎず、はっきりと自信を持って話すよう促しましょう。トピックを理解していることを示すために、だらだらと話すのではなく、できるだけ多く、かつ整理された内容で話すのが理想的です。中級や上級のスコアを目指す場合は、現在形以外の時制（過去や未来など）を使うことも重要です。事前に「AAPPL対話モード・スコア解説」を確認し、生徒と一緒に目標を設定しましょう。
Sometimes, the person in the video will offer a hint — test takers mustn’t repeat the hint exactly. They should change it up and add their own thoughts. The person in the video may also require the test taker to ask them questions. Learners should ask more than one question and keep them related to the topic.
動画内の人物がヒントをくれることがありますが、そのヒントをそのまま繰り返してはいけません。自分の言葉に言い換え、自分の考えを付け加える必要があります。また、相手から質問するように求められることもあります。その際は、トピックに関連した質問を2つ以上投げかけるようにしましょう。
Prepare your learners for this section by having conversations in class where they can practice answering questions and asking questions in return.
このセクションの準備として、授業中に質問に答えたり、逆に質問を返したりする練習を積み重ねてください。
Presentational Writing（発信モード：ライティング）
The writing portion of the test assesses a learner’s ability to use written language. Learners will need to write in response to prompts, and it’s crucial for them to read the instructions carefully and stay on topic. Writing more won’t automatically give them a better score.
ライティングセクションでは、書くことによる言語運用能力を評価します。提示された指示に対して文章を書きますが、指示を注意深く読み、トピックから外れないことが極めて重要です。「長く書けばスコアが上がる」というわけではありません。
The questions may require test takers to write a simple list, an email, create a journal entry, or describe events. Test takers should format their answers according to the question. For example, if they need to write an email, it should start with a greeting and end with a closing. If they are asked to list items, they shouldn’t write long sentences or paragraphs.
課題には、単純なリスト作成、メールの作成、日記の記入、出来事の描写などがあります。受験者は問題に応じた形式で回答する必要があります。例えばメールであれば、適切な挨拶で始まり、結びの言葉で終わる形式にしなければなりません。リスト作成を求められている場合は、長い文章や段落を書く必要はありません。
The certified ACTFL rater will look at how well the learner responded to the prompt, not necessarily how much they wrote.

2. Perform a System Check（2. システムチェックの実施）
Take the AAPPL System Check in advance to ensure school devices are compatible with the test, the microphone and keyboard work, and the connection is stable. This will allow you to fix any issues in advance.
事前に「AAPPLシステムチェック」を行い、学校のデバイスがテストに対応しているか、マイクやキーボードが動作するか、接続が安定しているかを確認してください。これにより、トラブルを未然に防ぐことができます。
You will also need to complete a System Check right before your students take the test to ensure Live Captions on Chrome are not enabled and keyboard settings for their language are correct. Familiarizing yourself with this procedure beforehand will speed up the process on test day and limit the amount of technical difficulties.
また、テストの直前にも再度システムチェックを行い、Chromeの「自動字幕」がオフになっているか、入力言語の設定が正しいかを確認する必要があります。この手順に慣れておけば、当日の準備がスムーズになり、技術的なトラブルを最小限に抑えられます。
3. Review the Topics（3. トピックの復習）
Prepare your learners for the AAPPL by reviewing the AAPPL topics that can appear on the test. The topics in each test will be appropriate for their age and ability level. For example, learners who take Form A receive three prompts on the novice range and three in the intermediate range. Those who select Form B will have three in the intermediate and three in the advanced.

All the AAPPL topics are quite broad, so while your learners may not have proficiency in all of them, it’s important they at least understand some of the vocabulary in all the topics related to their level.

4. Do a Demo Test（4. デモテストの実施）
Before your learners take the AAPPL assessment, complete the demo AAPPL tests with them. This helps reduce anxiety about the test as learners will know what to expect and will be more familiar with the test format. When the test experience is no longer a mystery, they’ll have more confidence and provide better answers.

The AAPPL demo tests will also help you test keyboard settings for the Presentational Writing section. This is essential if you have students taking the test for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Russian, as you need to set up a specific keyboard layout.
